COURTNEY BABCOCK
Courtney is not your typical middle-distance runner. It’s obvious when you first meet
her: her humility, bubbly
personality, and ubiquitous smile are contagious. When you get to know her better, you find a dedicated work
ethic and intelligence that have been instrumental to her success. Courtney was nothing short of amazing while at the
University of Michigan, winning an NCAA championship, achieving All-American
status eight times, and heading four Big 10 Championship teams. She was also
selected to three All Big Ten academic teams and chosen as the “M” women of
the year in 1996. She was
recently inducted into the Michigan Athletic Hall of Fame! After graduating with a degree in communications/sports
broadcasting, Courtney left college with an impressive internship resume
including Sports Illustrated, Fox Sports, and ABC sports. She chose to put
her broadcasting career on hold and focus on her Olympic goals. She was
recruited by Coach Mark Timmons to run for the Mountain West Track Club in
Missoula, Montana in 1997. Under
Timmons, she would steadily build into an Olympic-qualifying middle-distance
runner who, while making the A-qualifying standard, narrowly missed selection
to the 2000 Canadian Olympic team.
2003 has been Courtney’s most successful year to date: 2 Canadian
national records (10,000m and 5000m), 3 Canadian national championship medals
(gold in 10,000m, silver in 5,000m, and bronze in 1500m), and finishing 8th
at the World Championships – just 3 seconds off 1st place.
