rider Margarette Johannes has been an integral part in shaping alpine
snowboarding. With national
events under her belt, Johannes is still hungry for international exposure
and recognition in big mountain snowboarding. UPDATE: An international
career which took off in earnest beginning in December, 2000 catapulted
Johannes to spend the past three seasons traveling to snowboard some of the
world's most extreme mountain pitches including Alaska, France's Aguille
Midi, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Some runs consisted of 78 degree pitches at
8 feet in width, others incorporate park style tactics. She heads to Hawaii
each summer for strength, yoga, and surf training before returning to the
peaks each fall for powder quests and filming.
START-UP: One lesson was
all it took to hook Johannes, an alpine skier in junior high school before
taking a free snowboarding class with friends. She juggled the two sports for
a few years, then entered her first race at 15 and never returned to skiing.
She originally planned to be an a full time artist, but her love and
determination to snowboard professionally splits her time with her artistic
goals. Johannes moved to Vail, Colorado where she resided for more than 6
seasons before relocating to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to follow her Big Mountain
snowboarding. PERSONAL: Johannes
completed her BA in art at UCSD, summa cum laude. She enjoys surfing, golfing, yoga, swimming, and other
various sports both recreationally and professionally as a sports model and
fashion model. QUOTE: "Riding park
and pipe is a blast, but I love hitting natural features: chutes, spines,
cliffs, trees, hips, steeps, pillow lines, jumps, anything in the
backcountry. I'll hike for hours for one epic run especially on a bluebird
day. Add two feet of fresh and I'll stay out all day with a huge smile." '05 - '06 Season: Slated work/events: Sept. 17th - 23rd Heli camp instructor Valle Nevado,
